1. Network

Keep in touch with colleagues, other contractors, and clients. Make the most of online tools such as LinkedIn to show off your skills and experience because a network of just 200 contacts can link you to more than 5 million professionals and one of them might just need someone with your level of expertise!

2. Become an 'Expert'

The best way to demonstrate your skills is to share your knowledge. Join forums and groups and then offer help and positive feedback to others. As you become known in the community you could ask for recommendations and referrals for work. Ensure that any testimonials received are published (with permission) for other potential clients to refer to.

3. Online Presence

If you operate through your own limited company (personal service company or PSC) then your business could benefit from a website advertising your skill set. These days you can create a professional looking website from home at a very low cost. Remember that the costs incurred can be reclaimed as legitimate business expenses.

4. Tweet

Not just for pop stars and politicians Twitter can be used to compliment your website and LinkedIn profile to keep your audience updated on your availability, achievements, as well as letting them see the best elements of your personality.

5. Branding

In all walks of life, people brand themselves – consciously or otherwise. Think of a good name for your business, and design a professional logo that will catch the attention of potential clients, but at the same time doesn’t overshadow the service you have to offer.

As a contractor YOU are the business. It is important to remember that people buy from people and therefore consider every encounter, whether you are at a networking event or a dinner party, as an opportunity to sell yourself. You never know when that next dream role may present itself.

Happy hunting!
