The Office for National Statistics is the UK's largest independent producer of official statistics and its National Statistical Institute.

We are responsible for collecting and publishing statistics related to the economy, population and society at national, regional and local levels. We also conduct the census in England and Wales every 10 years.

ONS produces statistics, analysis and research on a daily basis which has a major impact on the economy and society. From GDP to inflation, trade to migration, our statistics are always in the public eye and political debate. We have a track record of high quality outputs and are increasingly producing value-added analysis to allow Britain to make better decisions. Our analytical capability is growing the pool of expertise within the South Wales region as a hub of data capability.

Like many organisations ONS is continuously changing to keep pace with the modern world. The availability of data from sources we could not previously comprehend is changing the way we work and the insight we can provide for the benefit of government, business, public services, civic society and the public. As part of this we are building a centre of expertise through our Data Science Campus based in Newport. This will be a world-leading hub for data science as we use our growing capability and work in partnership with others innovate around the production of statistics, analysis and research.

The modern world provides us with a great opportunity to exploit huge amounts of data to help policymakers, researchers and businesses. It also, however, presents problems, how do we measure fast-evolving forms of economic activity and changes in society? This is our challenge and the ONS Data Science Campus is part of our response as we build a new generation of tools and technologies to exploit the growth and availability of innovative data sources and to provide rich informed measurement and analyses on the economy, the global environment and wider society. Under the collective title of - People, Planet and Prosperity, we will deliver five themed research programmes on: Urban future / Society / Sustainability / Evolving economy and UK in a global context.

The IWI event on 29 June 2017 will provide an opportunity for you to see how we are facing these challenges, including an overview of the innovative data science work we are undertaking. Part of our model is to work with others for mutual benefit so we are keen to build our relationships with you.
