Attributes of the great networker

Let's be clear; networking is not about selling. Selling is what happens when you get in front of a prospective client - networking is what puts you there.

Networking is all about building personal relationships and making friends. This is a process and requires time and effort. Once these friends understand your business, they can and will recommend you to people they know, who may be interested in what you have to offer. They will put you in a position to start selling.

The best networkers:

Never sell at a networking event. Almost no one goes to a networking event to buy so, logically, they don't like it when someone tries to sell to them.

Are patient. Building trust takes time.

Ask questions and listen to the answers.

Are genuinely interested in other people and in their businesses.

Are generous with their time and expertise - always willing to help

Always deliver on their promises.

Look to build personal, rather than professional relationships

If you approach your networking with this mind-set you will develop a network of ambassadors who will not only introduce you consistently to potential customers, they will become your friends.
