7 Top Tips for Networking at Business Shows

Mention the event on your social networks

Let your contacts know you are going to the event beforehand. Business shows are a good opportunity to catch up with people. By promoting the event you are also helping boost the numbers attending making for a better show!

Talk to as many people as you can

Speak to the exhibitors and take an interest in their products and services. You may not necessarily be interested in what they are promoting but you may discover opportunities for working together in some way. Avoid wasting their time if their stands are busy however!

Attend the workshops and seminars

These are usually free and you are bound to pick up some useful nuggets of information that could benefit your business. The larger shows have a huge range of seminars on offer so it is worth planning beforehand what you want to see.

Take a break

It can be very tiring wandering around a business show so make sure you stop for a coffee at some point. As well as providing a chance to recharge your batteries, the cafe areas are great for a bit of impromptu networking

Take plenty of business cards with you

Unless you are a pre-start business and don’t yet have a card, it is important to bring these with you to hand out to any new contacts you make. Forgetting business cards doesn’t portray a very professional image.

Take part in the Speed Networking Sessions

Many shows hold free Speed Networking sessions as part of their event. These are great fun and a good way to spread the word about your business. Prepare a 60 second ‘pitch’ about your business beforehand. Ensure that people are able to understand what your business does; concentrate on the benefits rather than the features.

Follow up with new contacts after the show

So you have made some useful contacts at the show. Make sure you follow up with them after the event. Take the time to write personalised emails rather than sending the same message to everyone. Connecting on LinkedIn is a great way to stay in touch.
